Backpack Trip:
Appalachian Trail: Ensign Cowall to Antietam shelter
Date: Apr 7-10, 2011
Depart:
Thursday Apr 7th, noonish or
Friday Apr 8th, morning from ACDC.
Return: Sunday Apr 10th to ACDC.
Drive Time: approx 6 hours
Cost: We will not collect a fee for the trip. Each person needs to carry enough money to pay their expenses as they go.
- Gas money. ($20 to your driver)
- Personal meals/snacks/pop. (on your own)
Activity:
Option #1
Thurs - Travel to Smithsburg, MD - no hiking, camp at or near Ensign Cowall shelter
Fridy - Hike 9.4 miles to Pen Mar Park. Camp along trail.
Saturday - Hike 7.5 miles to Antietam shelter. Camp at or near shelter.
Sunday - Hike 1/4 mile to Old Forge Road Picnic Area & leave for home.

Option #2
Friday - Leave early morning. Travel to Old Forge Road Picnic Area.
Friday afternoon - hike 2.4 miles to Deerlick shelters. Camp at or near shelter.
Saturday - Hike 9.6 miles to Raven Rock shelter. Camp at or near shelter.
Sunday - Hike 4.9 miles to Ensign Cowall shelter. Leave for home.
Water:Water is available near the shelters and different places along the trail.
Meals: Bring/cook your own backpacking meals. (No more than 1-2lbs./day)
Bear Bagging: We will hang all food & "smellables" properly at night. Each person will need gear for hanging a bear bag. See the Bear Bagging page.
Shelter: Be prepared to camp away from shelters. If a shelter happens to be empty, we will use it.
Weather: Keep an eye on the weather forecast & adjust your gear accordingly.
April temperatures are normally 40°-60°
Car Bag: Bring a small car bag with a set of clothes, soap, towel, MP3 player, money, etc.
